Global warming refers to the increase in the average global temperature of the Earth over time.
By average global temperature, I mean taking the temperature of the air, water, and land from as many places on Earth as possible and averaging all the temperatures.
Then also average these temperatures over a reasonable period of time, usually a year, to minimize the effect of short term events. Here is a bar graph of global temperatures over the last 107 years showing the warming trend. The dip from the late 1940s to the mid 1970s was due to the release of sunlight reflecting aerosols by burning dirty (high sulfur).
There are a huge number of factors controlling the earth’s climate. The sun and its cycles play a major role. On earth, the interactions of the Land, Sea, Air and Ice Caps have major effects on climate.
CO2 is a known cause of of atmospheric warming. This was demonstrated in the early 19th century and never dis-proven.
It is extremely difficult to measure everything that might matter in all places that might be significant and eliminate all extraneous effects. Consequently there is extremely lively debate on the interpretation of these data.
